What Is an AEO Tracker? How to Track Your Brand in AI Answers

An AEO (answer engine optimization) tracker is software that asks AI systems the questions your buyers ask, again and again, and records what each answer says about your brand: whether it is mentioned, whether it is recommended, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited. It does for AI answers what a rank tracker does for search results, with one important difference: AI answers change from one run to the next, so the tracker has to measure patterns, not single results.

Why a rank tracker cannot measure AI answers

Rank trackers were built for a list of links. They record one position for one keyword, and that position is fairly stable from one check to the next. An AI answer is generated text. It may name several brands, recommend one, cite a review site instead of your page, or name no brand at all, and asking the same question again can produce a different answer.

That variability is the reason one check tells you almost nothing. A useful AEO tracker asks each question many times and reports the share of answers in which your brand appears or is recommended, together with the evidence behind that number.

What a good AEO tracker measures

Five measurements cover most of what a team needs to explain a change and decide what to do next.

  • Mention rate and recommendation rate, tracked separately. Being listed is not the same as being recommended.
  • Share of voice against a fixed set of competitors on the same questions, market and dates.
  • Cited sources: the pages and domains linked in each answer, including third-party review and comparison sites.
  • Accuracy: whether answers describe your pricing, features and positioning correctly, with the full answer text saved.
  • Coverage across AI systems, because ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews answer differently.

How to choose an AEO tracker

Before comparing tools, write down 20 to 30 questions your buyers really ask: category questions, comparisons and problem questions. Run the same set in each tool you are evaluating and check six things.

  • Repeated sampling: how many times each question is asked. One answer per question is an anecdote, not a measurement.
  • Full answers and sources: whether you can open the actual answer and its links, not only a score.
  • Mentions vs recommendations: whether the tool separates the two.
  • AI systems included: whether the systems your buyers use are included on the plan you would buy, or sold as add-ons.
  • Next actions: whether it points to the page, source or competitor gap to work on.
  • Cost at your scale: the price for your real number of questions, brands and AI systems.

How Digraph tracks AEO

Digraph checks 9 AI systems, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Each question is asked up to 250 times on real virtual machines that open each tool the way a person would, and every answer is saved with its date, its sources and the competitors it names. The AI coverage page lists the systems and how answers are collected.

Start with a baseline

Pick your buyer questions, record where you stand today across the AI systems that matter, and re-check the same questions after each change. Compare repeated patterns, not single answers, and keep the market, language and date beside every result.

Common questions

What is an AEO tracker?

An AEO tracker is software that repeatedly asks AI systems your buyers’ questions and records whether each answer mentions, recommends or cites your brand, which competitors appear, and which sources are linked.

Is an AEO tracker the same as a GEO tool?

Mostly. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO describe the same goal, and tools sold under either name generally track how AI systems answer questions about your category.

How often should I check AI visibility?

Weekly is enough for most teams. Because answers vary from run to run, look at trends over several weeks rather than reacting to a single change.

Can an AEO tracker guarantee my brand appears in AI answers?

No. A tracker measures and explains. Inclusion depends on your content, the sources AI systems trust and your competitors; the tracker shows where to focus and whether changes worked.
