AI search is becoming an operating surface for brand teams. The practical question is not whether a single model response changed—it is whether the change reveals something your team can verify and improve.
What changed on August 31
Google has completed the worldwide rollout of dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console, according to an update added to its Search Central documentation on August 31. The reports were first announced in June and initially tested with a subset of websites. They now provide separate views of how a site appears in generative AI features across Google Search and Discover. Google also says its related site-level control for participating in those features is now available worldwide.
What the Search report measures
The Search report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows which pages appeared, the countries where those appearances occurred, the devices involved, and movement over time. Google defines an impression here as an occasion when a link to the site was shown to a user in a supported generative AI feature. The chart aggregates data at property level, while page-level tables use the canonical or final linked URL. That makes the report useful for establishing a first-party visibility baseline inside Google’s AI surfaces.
An impression is not a recommendation
The new report does not show the language of the answer, whether a brand was recommended, which competitors appeared beside it, or which claim a page supported. It also does not expose the user prompts behind the appearances. Search Engine Journal notes that the report does not include click data at launch. Teams should therefore avoid treating a rising impression line as proof of stronger consideration, better sentiment, or commercial impact. It records exposure to a link inside an AI feature—not the full outcome of the answer.
The rollout still has practical caveats
Google’s announcement says the insights have rolled out to all websites worldwide, but its help pages still warn that some properties may not see the report. A site may also lack enough generative AI impressions to qualify for reporting. The newest data can be preliminary, daily values use Pacific Time, and standard Search Console limits still apply. These details matter when teams compare the report with internal analytics or independent AI-visibility monitoring. A missing report or a short-term movement should not be overinterpreted.
Use it as one layer in a wider evidence system
The useful workflow is to place Search Console’s first-party impression trend beside repeated prompt monitoring, captured answers, citation URLs, brand framing, competitor presence, and downstream analytics. Search Console can show that Google exposed a page in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Answer-level monitoring can then help explain the question, narrative, evidence, and competitive context around that exposure. Web analytics and commercial data can test what happened after a visit. Each layer measures a different part of the discovery journey.
Set a baseline before optimizing
For teams that can access the report, the immediate task is simple: export the current data, record the reporting window, and identify which pages and countries account for most impressions. Keep AI-search impressions separate from ordinary search performance and from visibility measured in other answer engines. Then revisit the same view on a stable cadence. The goal is not to chase every daily movement; it is to learn which durable page and market patterns deserve investigation.

Google has made AI-search visibility more observable, but not fully explained. The worldwide Search Console rollout gives website owners a valuable first-party record of appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not replace answer-level evidence, citation analysis, competitor monitoring, or outcome measurement. The strongest measurement programs will use the new report as a baseline—then connect it to the questions, answers, sources, and decisions that an impression count cannot show.
