The short answer
AEO is not a replacement for SEO. AI answer systems that search the web still need pages they can crawl, understand, and trust, and Google’s AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible for snippets. If your SEO foundations are weak, AEO work has little to build on.
The difference is the outcome. An SEO report asks whether the page ranked and earned traffic. An AEO report asks whether the answer named your brand, recommended it, described it accurately, and cited a page that supports the claim.
Where AEO and SEO overlap
Most of the work is shared. Crawlable pages, clear structure, accurate facts, useful content written for people, and a strong reputation on other sites help in both places. A single good page often supports a ranking and an AI citation at the same time.
- Technical access: pages are crawlable, indexable, and not blocked for the crawlers that matter.
- Clear answers: the page states the answer early, then adds detail and evidence.
- Entity clarity: the company, product, category, and audience are described consistently.
- Authority: relevant independent sites mention and link to the brand.
Where they differ
Measurement is the main difference. A rank tracker can check a keyword and get a stable position. An AI system can give a different answer to the same question minutes later, so one answer is an observation, not a result. AEO needs repeated checks and a record of the full answer, its sources, and the competitors named.
The competitive set also changes. In SEO you compete for ten links on a page. In an AI answer, the system may name three or four brands, or none, and may cite a review site, a forum thread, or a competitor’s comparison page instead of yours. AEO work therefore includes finding and improving the third-party sources the answers lean on.
How to run AEO and SEO together
Use one topic plan and one destination page per topic, then measure two outcomes for it. That stops teams creating near-duplicate pages for “AEO”, “GEO”, and “SEO” versions of the same subject.
- Pick the buyer questions and the matching search keywords for each topic.
- Record the SEO baseline: rankings, impressions, and clicks in Search Console.
- Record the AEO baseline: mention, recommendation, framing, and cited sources across repeated answers.
- Classify each gap as access, content, accuracy, authority, or normal answer variation.
- Change one thing, then re-check both views for the same topic.
What AEO cannot promise
No markup, file, or writing formula guarantees that an AI system will name your brand. Structured data helps only when it matches visible content, and answer behavior changes with the question, the system, and the date. Treat AEO as measurement plus evidence improvement, and report results with their scope.
Compare the approaches
| Dimension | SEO | AEO | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page and earn the click | Be named, recommended, or cited in the answer | Track both outcomes for the same topic. |
| Where it shows | Classic search result pages | AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews | Name the surface before comparing results. |
| Unit of measurement | Keyword, position, impressions, clicks | Question, answer text, mention, recommendation, cited source | Save the full answer, not only a score. |
| Main tools | Search Console, rank trackers, analytics | AI visibility tracking across repeated answers | Keep the two views connected by topic and URL. |
| Stability | Rankings move, but one check is fairly repeatable | The same question can produce different answers | Ask each question many times and report patterns. |
| Influence of other sites | Links and mentions build authority | Third-party pages are often the sources an answer cites | Find which sources the answers rely on. |
Common questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank pages in search results and earn clicks. AEO aims to get a brand named, recommended, or cited inside AI-generated answers. They share technical and content foundations but measure different outcomes.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answer systems that search the web rely on the same crawlable, useful, trusted pages that SEO builds. AEO adds a way to measure and improve how those answers represent your brand.
Should I do AEO or SEO first?
Fix SEO foundations first if pages are not crawlable, indexed, or clearly written. Then add AEO measurement for the buyer questions that matter, because a strong ranking does not guarantee the AI answer names you.
How do I measure AEO?
Ask the same buyer questions across the AI systems you care about, many times, and record whether each answer mentions, recommends, or cites your brand, which competitors appear, and which sources are linked. Compare the same scope over time.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly. Both describe getting a brand into AI-generated answers. GEO tends to stress how generative systems understand a brand and its evidence, AEO the question and the answer. See the GEO vs AEO guide for the detail.
